What is the history of Berkey® Water Filters? In England, in the year 1815, a man named John Doulton founded his first pottery. As early as 1827, his son Henry developed ceramic filters for removing bacteria from drinking water, because the Thames river was heavily contaminated with raw sewage. Cholera and typhoid epidemics were rampant at that time.
Queen Victoria commissioned Henry to produce a water filter for the Royal household. He developed micro-porous ceramic cartridges capable of removing bacteria with better than 99% efficiency. These Berkey® gravity filters and are in use in over 150 countries. With both the ceramic filters and Black Berkey® Purification Elements, Berkey® is the water filter that has truly stood the test of time. Today the Berkey® name is the preferred choice for water purification products in world-wide locations where outbreaks of illness are associated with unreliable water supplies.
What is the difference between the ceramic and the black?
The Black Berkey Purification elements assay at a very slight percentage better filtration than the ceramic filters. However, water pressure is needed to prime the black elements, while the ceramic filters can be primed without water pressure. The ceramic filters are therefore used in countries where electricity is not available.
What are some of the water sources I can filter through the Berkey®?
Whatever you have available. Tap water, bottled water, water you have stored, as well as water from ponds, creeks, lakes, rivers, wells, cisterns, rain water . . . may all be used with peace of mind for drinking, cooking, or washing up. If you live in a city where arsenic and flouride are a concern, you will want to add the PF-2 post filters to your system.
How does the system work?
Just add water to the upper chamber and let gravity do the rest.
Historically, who has used the Berkeys®?
Relief Organizations such as Unicef, The Peace Corps, Red Cross societies internationally, missionaries in over 140 countries and populations in industrialized and third world countries. In the US more and more families and organizations are using Berkeys® .
Does the system remove beneficial minerals?
No.
How do I determine which Berkey system is right for my needs?
The most popular small family model is the Big Berkey® . The Berkey Light® is popular for outdoor activities. The Berkey Imperial® and Crown® models are for large groups and can serve 120 to 160 people per day.
What are the limitations found in other types of water filtration systems?
The short answers to your question:
Bottled Water: Much bottled water comes straight from tap water. This of course means that many brands of bottled water contain the high levels of bacteria and other contaminants found in tap water, which includes formaldehyde, rocket fuel, voc's, heavy metals, and more. The bottled water industry is virtually unregulated.
Carbon Block, paper and certain resin based filters: These filters are not re-cleanable, there is no feedback mechanism for filter replacement, and they do not remove pathogenic bacteria. They must be replaced often to avoid bacteriological colonization of the elements.
Distillation: Removes beneficial minerals from water, while voc's remain.
Reverse Osmosis: Removes beneficial minerals from water, does not remove pathogenic bacteria, the filter is not re-cleanable, there is no feedback mechanism for filter replacement, and the reservoir tank can become a breeding ground for bacteria. This system also wastes a lot of water during processing.
Is Willard Water safe?
Willard Water, with twenty-one patents and three different formulas, has been declared by the FDA to be non-toxic, non-corrosive, and non-carcinogenic, with no harmful effects. Manufacture of Willard Water at CAW Industries in Rapid City, South Dakota is overseen by the FDA. Willard Water was proven by Congressional investigation to be safe for human and animal consumption as well as for use in growing plants.
How much Willard Water should I drink?
This is an individual choice. Some people drink two or three glasses a day, while others take two quarts or more. Because Willard Water is a “wetter” solution than ordinary water, it enters the cells rather than merely surrounding them, so a much greater level of hydration occurs. The often-recommended “eight glasses a day” of ordinary water may leave cells dehydrated, while a lesser quantity of Willard Water fulfills the need for full cellular hydration.
Which formula should I use, Clear or XXX or XLR-8?
They are interchangeable, so we don't know. They all have similar effects, so we ourselves use all three without trying to figure it out.
How does Willard Water work as a free radical scavenger?
If our bodies do not have enough anti-oxidants, free radicals steal electrons from the molecules of healthy cells, causing the damage called oxidation, similar to corrosion or rust. Anti-oxidants such as Pycnogenol and vitamins C or E become free radicals themselves once their supplies of electrons are given up. Due to its extremely high negative hydrogen (H-) content, Willard Water possesses an abundant supply of electrons and therefore works as an anti-oxidant that does not become a free radical once it gives up an electron, because it is able to attract more.
Is "Real" Willard Water any different than your Willard Water?
No. We sell both Willard Water and "Real Willard Water," a bit confusing, we admit. And that's not the end of it! There are three formulas of Willard Water that are manufactured and bottled at CAW Industries, the original Willard Water plant run by John W. Willard, Jr. in Rapid City, South Dakota. Peace to Your Cells is an authorized distributor for each of these: Clear, LA Water XXX, and Real Willard Water XLR-8. The third formula is manufactured by special arrangement for a company in North Dakota who were personal friends of "Doc" Willard, called Nutrition Coalition. We buy this third formula through them, along with their Chinota Gel. We buy the Clear and the LA Water XXX directly from CAW Industries. As we said, all three are manufactured by CAW Industries; all are original patented formulas of real Willard Water - no dilution in any of these concentrates.
