The dual media KDF Berkey Shower Filter will typically last 10,000 gallons or one year, whichever comes first. The Berkey shower filter contains KDF 55 granules, which are most effective in removing or reducing chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, microorganisms, scale and water-soluble heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and iron. KDF process media also kill bacteria and inhibit the growth of bacteria, algae, and fungi. As an added benefit, KDF media reduce lime scale, mold, and fungi in your shower. KDF process media are completely safe so the process is not toxic and does not cause any adverse side effects. Effective for both hot and cold water.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

     In the shower environment, chlorine can either be in liquid or gas state. At higher water temperatures in the enclosed shower stall, free-chlorine moves from the liquid to the gas state, where it vaporizes and subsequently is inhaled. The United States regulates all showerhead flow at 2.5 gallons per minute. Thus, the science behind shower filtration must take into account the unique situation in the shower, including temperature, flow rate and volume.

     Our Dual Media KDF Berkey Shower Filter works on a similar principle to a catalytic converter in an automobile. In shower filtration free-chlorine is converted into a harmless chloride. The scientific name for this chemical reaction is known as "Reduction-Oxidation", commonly referred to as Redox. Redox reactions can be chemically complex. Simply stated, during a Redox reaction electrons are transferred between molecules, creating new elements. For instance, when free-chlorine comes in contact with the filtration media, it is changed into a benign, water-soluble chloride. This reaction changes free-chlorine to a larger chloride element, too large to evaporate or be absorbed by the skin. It is then carried harmlessly through the water supply. Hospitals, restaurants, municipal water treatment facilities, and homes rely on KDF process media to safely reduce or remove free chlorine, iron, iron oxides, heavy metals, hydrogen sulfide and bacteria from their water.

      The KDF process media used in the berkey shower filter are high-purity copper-zinc formulations used in treatment applications to reduce heavy metals, hydrogen sulfide, microorganisms, and scale. Water filtered through redox media controls microorganism growth. Treating water reduces bacteria and other microorganisms by electron transport, causing cellular damage. KDF process media also kill bacteria by direct electrochemical contact and by the flash formation hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide, both of which interfere with a microorganism's ability to function. High-purity copper-zinc redox media consistently remove 99% of free chlorine by electrochemically reducing dissolved chlorine gas to water-soluble chloride ions.

      Redox media remove up to 98% of water-soluble cations (positively-charged ions) of lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals. When filtered through KDF media, soluble lead cations are reduced to insoluble lead atoms, which are electroplated onto the surface of the media. All forms of KDF media are guaranteed for product purity, and a certified analytical sheet accompanies each manufacturing run. KDF media also meet EPA and Food and Drug Administration standards for maximum limits of zinc and copper in potable water.

IONIC ADSORPTION MICRO FILTRATION
This advanced technology was developed, refined, and proven through diligent, investigative research and testing performed by water purification specialists, researchers and engineers. The media within the filter element removes contaminants by a surface phenomenon known as "adsorption" which results from the molecular attraction of substances to the surface of the media. As the bottle is pressed, the source water is forced through the filter. The quality and volume of media used, determine the rate of adsorption. The flow rate or time of exposure through the filter has been calculated to yield the greatest volume removal of toxic chemicals caused by pollution from industry and agriculture. This exclusive filter element is impregnated with proprietary "absorbing" media that promotes IONIC "absorption" of pollutants within the micro-porous element, such as aluminum, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, and other dangerous heavy metals.

The "Tortuous Path" structure of these pores gives it its unique characteristics. The Sport Berkey® Portable Water Purifier offers a convenient and portable filtration system using medical grade technology.

Note: If using a source of water that might contain extreme bacteriological or viral contamination, it is recommended that two drops of plain chlorinated bleach or iodine be added to each refill before filtering. This will kill minute pathogens such as viruses. The disinfectant will then be filtered from the water entirely removing its odor, color and taste.

Care and Use

Fill the Sport Berkey® Portable Water Purifier with water, screw on cap and tighten securely to eliminate leaks. Flush water through filter by pulling down lever, so that straw is exposed, and squeeze water through filter & out the straw. Repeat this flushing process twice before drinking. This removes excess process dust from the filter. After 2 flushes, rinse the bottle & cap. Your filter bottle is now ready for use. Enjoy!

Maintenance and Storage

The Sport Berkey® Portable Water Purifier has a shelf life of 50 years. When the filter system will not be used for an extended period, flush the unit with a chlorinated solution of 1/4 tsp. per one half gallon of water. Allow to dry thoroughly with cap removed. Re-assemble and stow. Do not allow filter to freeze, do not place in microwave oven and do not run hot water through the filter.

Note: All contaminants that this filter has the ability to remove or reduce may not necessarily be in the user's water supply.
